Another cult classic from the Shaw Brothers Studio, The Flag of Iron is a quintessential Hong Kong tale of rivals, betrayal and family feuds. When the master of the Iron Flag clan is killed by a mysterious assassin known only as Spearman, it sets off an explosive chain of events which pits two brothers against each other in an action-packed adventure of fist flying fury. Directed by Cheh Chang (The One-Armed Swordsman, Five Venoms), this kinetic and highly influential Kung Fu picture, mixes traditional storytelling with more modern presentation techniques, layering acrobatics, the use exotic weaponry and quick as lightening fight sequences to produce a sure fire entertaining hit, which no serious collector of martial arts movies can be without.

Because these two movies will absolutely, positively melt your face off and are a damn sight better than Disciples of Shaolin (1975) with its myriad of problems, fun though that too may be.

Whether using spears, swords, fists or furniture, their skills are displayed front and center, both in real time and slow motion.

     —D.M.Anderson, Free Kittens Movie Guide

There are lots of cool weapons in the film, and even the use of flags during the action looked far cooler than I had expected.

The transfer is beautifully rendered on Blu-Ray by 88 Films.

     —A.W. Kautzer, The Movie Isle

The more grounded tendency to keep them from flying through the air and rely more on fast-paced hand-to-hand combat that relies on traditional move-sets and defenses, this setup provides a strong baseline for the energetic sequences to appear later on featuring the massive brawl between the studios, the series of street-fights involving the rival assassins sent to even the score and the high-energy finale that features multiple massive gang-fights including multiple performers engaging in thrilling, intricately-choreographed setpieces that involve hand-to-hand or weaponry in the fights.

     —Don's Horror World

In addition to the great picture the disc features Mandarin and English soundtracks, a richly illustrated booklet with an essay by film historian Andrew Graves and a fun, insightful audio commentary from Mike Leeder and Arne Venema that all adds up to a beautiful package from 88 Films that puts some long overdue respect on the Shaw Brothers name.

     —Ink 19
