Patti Page received her first break while in high school when she performed on Tulsa station KTUL. The Page Milk Company sponsored the radio program which gave rise to her professional singing name Patti Page. Patti relocated to Chicago where she was then offered a recording contract and for the first time in musical history, the record label listed the singers as "Patti Page, Patti Page, Patti Page and Patti Page" on a release. It created a great stir since it was one of the first multi-track vocal recordings, in which Patti appeared to be singing duets with herself. Throughout the 1950s Patti Page sold more records than any other female vocalist but admittedly the majority of her hits were "novelty" numbers ("The Doggie In The Window", "Mister And Mississippi", "Mockingbird Hill" etc) and critics often dismissed her ability, failing to recognise that given a "standard" tune Patti was a more than capable singer. As the majority of her hits can be found on recent compilations we have featured recordings from her "earlier" period including the very rare "What Every Woman Knows", possibly her first 78 for Mercury, and a fair number of standards that have not appeared on CD before. Patti won her first Grammy Award in 1999 and still performs today sounding as good as she was in these recordings from over fifty years ago.
