"The era of the Tenor sax" is how Duke Ellington described the post-war slump that saw the decline of the big bands. Many of the sax stars of the big bands enjoyed huge success in the R&B charts, especially the exotic Lynn Hope -"the amazing man with the turban" who took the standard "Tenderly" into the top 10 in 1950.
