Lisa Kirk was from the Broadway stage. Discovered by Richard Rodgers for his musical - 'Allegro' where she introduced "The Gentleman Is A Dope", the show wafted Lisa Kirk to fame. When 'Allegro' closed Cole Porter wanted her for 'Kiss Me, Kate' a show he had just written. Lisa played Lois Lane/Bianca deliciously and got to sing "Why Can't You Behave" and "Always True To You In My Fashion" eight times a week in 'Kate' which ran for over 1000 performances. While playing in 'Kate' Lisa doubled into the Plaza Hotel's swanky Persian Room and had the unusual distinction of having starred at the Persian Room eight times in the next seven years - and packing them in at every performance. In the meantime Lisa Kirk signed with a major record label and between 1949 and 1953 recorded over 40 sides - some novelty, some from the stage and some standards. On this CD we are pleased to feature 25 of these tracks of which 24 were previously unavailable on LP or CD. Television appearances and supper club cabaret performances kept Lisa busy throughout the 1950s across America and London saw her one woman show at The Talk of The Town towards the end of the decade. When the musical 'Gypsy' was filmed with Rosalind Russell, it was Lisa Kirk who dubbed for Miss Russell who was lacking in the vocals department. Fans of the Jerry Herman 1974 cult musical 'Mack and Mabel' will also note Lisa's appearance in this short-lived show. A year before her death in 1990 Londoners saw Lisa for the last time when she appeared in another Cole Porter show 'Nymph Errant' at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.
